MEET OUR CONSULTANTS

Who better to express what it’s like to join us than a few members of our team.

Caro Ruttledge – Principal

Hear from Caro on her experience working at Gate One.

LAURA FENTON – SENIOR CONSULTANT

What motivated you to join Gate One?

The chance to get creative. We all have the space to design and manage our own internal projects, which in turn help drive the direction of the firm.

What is the most interesting project you have worked on?

Working at a global investment bank was a novel experience for me. I was running a global project so catching up with clients based New York, Hong Kong and Europe was very interesting.

What types of clients and projects have you worked on whilst at Gate One?

Everything from financial services to not-for-profits. That’s not to forget the internal projects I’ve been part of, which have included Incubator ideas, internal communications and Gate One’s coaching model.

Which part of working at Gate One do you enjoy the most?

It’s got to be the summer Gateaways! Spending the week reconnecting with colleagues who’ve been working on projects across the UK, plus creating the business plan and direction for the next year in beautiful European settings always feels pretty epic.

JAMES SWAFFIELD – CLIENT DIRECTOR

How does working for Gate One differ to your experience of working in a big firm?

At Gate One it’s a matter of experience + potential + appetite for doing what you want to do that guide where and how you work. It’s a thoroughly refreshing approach compared to the common big-firm questions of “What are you known for?”, “Have you got enough internal visibility?” and “Have you been investing enough time in your internal business network?”.

What’s unique about the skills and experience you have had the opportunity to develop at Gate One?

You own them yourselves. If you want to over-invest in entrepreneurship – do it. Digital – do it. Coaching – do it. You’re empowered to build your own version of an excellent consultant built around a professional core.

How do you feel your work has made a difference to your clients?

It’s more about outcomes than outputs. A beautiful report isn’t the end of an engagement, but the start of change for the organisation.

How would you describe the Gate One team?

Where I was before, everyone knew who the ‘good’ consultants were – the team members you loved having on your client teams. They pulled their weight, could be trusted in any client situation, and told you if they needed support. Here, we only have the ‘good’ ones.

CLAIRE LAING – MANAGER

How has Gate One supported your career progression?

As well as committing to our clients and delivering what’s best for them, we genuinely care about our team’s professional development needs too. I have felt this on several occasions when being considered for various projects and roles – my personal objectives have always been an important part of the conversation.

What is the most rewarding thing about your client work?

Building genuine relationships with clients which go way beyond the project. Setting individuals and teams up to deliver results and sustainable change way beyond our time with them. Then hearing how things are going afterwards.

What have you been involved in outside of your client work?

So much! It was one of the reasons I joined. The highlights have been leading the people and talent team, developing our change proposition and running Gateaways.

What has most surprised you about being in the Gate One team?

Everyone has a voice. Whether you have a view on our business plan for next year or what makes the most compelling employee value proposition, if you speak up you’re heard!

James S showed outstanding determination in the face of adversity. He always came out the other side with enormous admiration from both clients and colleagues.
Sarah has absolutely bags of patience, care, consideration and empathy all whilst doing an incredible job. She’s the kind of person you are glad to have in your circle.
Selina is quietly effective and not one to shout about all the things she does. From running our CSR, to leading on quality, and through her network of previous clients.
Umbar always agitates for an atmosphere of inclusiveness and honesty.
To come up with a new business idea is one thing but to have the conviction to drive it through and have the guts to go for it makes Mike a legend in my eyes.

THE GATE ONE GATE AWAYS

Every Quarter, the Gate One team sets off on a trip away to set the strategy, celebrate success and come together as a group. The theme and priorities for each trip are unique and have ranged from our re-brand, coaching, to a proposition hackathon. They each culminate in an overnight stay at an equally unique venue. At the summer quarterly each year, we take the Gate Away abroad for an extended trip of business planning, looking back at the year and enjoying the local activities on offer.

So far our annual Gate Aways have taken us all over Europe:
